DJO - IN MY RESEARCH I DISCOVERED THAT RACHAEL HAUSER JESSUP IS SISTER TO
JONATHAN DAVID HOOSER
A letter from Rachel Jessup to J. D. Hooser and family as follows:
Belmore, Indiana
J. D. Hooser and family
Nov. 6th 1862
Your letter was received just one month after it was writtenand we
were glad to learn that you were yet alive. We heard that you were
killed in the fight with the Indians etc. etc.
Out conference went off well except in the case of brother Shigley.
He had been preaching spiritualism butthe conference retained him. Our
Preacher is an eastern man by the name ofWhite. My circuit is Cole
Creek among the Sesechmilksick. The war excitement is not so great as
formerly. The people have got used to hearing of fire and slaughter.
Times are good in some respects. Plenty to eat and money plenty.
Health good and weather fine at present. The 24th there was a 7-inch
snow. The green woods with every leaf covered (loaded) with snow
exceeded anything we have seen. Jacob Vance is dead. He died at
Hellena, Arkansa the21st of last month. He took chills and they verged
in the direction of consumption and took him off. Elizabeth takes it
quite hard.
Hiram has been discharged and got home today and there is a glad set
here now. Jackson is somebetter than he was when you left. Leah and
her man are going to move 12 miles south of Rockville just over the
County line on the railroad.
Jacob Mater is in the army. He was at Keokuk the last account. His
family is in DavisCounty, Iowa. We cannot tell you what Regiment he is
in. We would like toknow whether you were wounded or not and whether
Jim's horse got away from the Indians. John Russel and family are here
living in Belmore. Isaac Asburyis pop (?)
William Culver has sore eyes and Hannah is staying there.
The dayof the election Douglas Payton said in the presence of some
returned soldiersthat Negroes had as much right to vote as they. The
gentleman was handed from one to another by hand and foot until he will
not forget the election of 1862 while he lives.
Old Baker at the Morlans Mills is dead and the west partof the damn
there is washed out.
Religion is at a low ebb here, yet the prospect is brightening. I wish I
was out there to preach a while for the pioneers.

By Judge Lyman T. Yeargin [c. 1920,s] transcribed and donated by Susan
Cook (extra infromation contributed by Deanna Wolff and Caroline Coon
No soonerhad we uploaded this nifty piece by Judge Yeargin from the
1920,s when Caroline Coon sent a whole slew of info on this cemetery
which was printed in theColes newspapers of the time. I have added them
onto the Judge,s compilation. After the transcription are the newspaper
articles dealing with the cleanup of Berry Cemetery and some more
historical information. Many thanks to Caroline for this info and to
Deanna Wolff for giving the infor to Caroline! (When Caroline gets her
new scanner working, we hope to include some picture ofthe tombtones)
Judge Yeargin's work
The oldest cemetery in this section of the Illiniois is the Berry
Cemetery one and half miles nother and east of Oakland. Oakland was
settled in the 1830's by Samuel Ashmore. History tell us that he was the
first person to locate in Oakland, then almost a forest of trees.
However, Mr. Ashmore came to this part of Illiois a year or two previous
to 1830, for he lived in the Brusky Fork neighborhood in 1828-29. When
the Berry graveyard was laid out, Mr. Ashmore and Samuel Black and a few
otherneighbors living in the Brushy fork neighborhood built a log church
and services were held in this chruch nearly a yrear before the first
burial, which according to known records was in 1832, that of a Mrs. Eliz
Morrison, who cameform the state of Birginia and the previous year.
However, we must take exceptions to this statement, for a short time ago
we found a gravestone marked 1814 but all other marks had been completely
obliterated by the ravages of time. Two other very ancient tombstones
were found by Mr. Roy Mitchell and Major Matthew Miller. There was no
lettering on these tombstone, for age had obliterated them. No other
tombstone of a like cahracteer had ever been seen before by any of the
party who visited the Berry cemetery at this time which was in September
1917. Mr. Wilbur Hackett, a son of the late George Hackett, who came to
Illinois sometime between 1830 and 1840 says that he has not the least
doubt but that the French and the Kickapoo Indians used this cemeteryto
bury their dead in before the 18th century. Mr. Hackett says that he has
heard his father tell of the French and Indians who were here when he
first came to this country.
This cemetery is in a most deplorable condition. In all probability
ther has not been an interment in it for the last 25 years. There are no
roads leading to it. It is surrounded on three sides by corn fields and
on one side by a large pasture. Sumac nearly as tall as a horse are
found growing abundantly. The barbed wire fence which surrounded the
cemetery are all down. In fact it presents a most desolate looking
appearence. Most of the tombstones have fallen either flat on the
ground, in front of the graves or to one side. Indeed, a grave could not
be found but that was flat. There are no rounded mounds. In going to
this cemetery Mr. Mitchell and this writer missed finding it by a half
mile or more although in the earlier days Roy Mitchell had visited this
cemettery many times. There used to be a public road leading to it, a
cut off to the East after you crossed Hoag's Branchbridge, but this road
has been closed for over 20 years. In going, the trioclimbed several
fences, wnet through several valley and once went through acorn field,
crossing Hoag's Branch three times in their wanderings. In the Berry
graveyard lie the remains of a great many of the old poneers. These were
the early settlers. They were buried there because there was no other
cemetery within thirty or forty miles. The granfat255 M v John H. Hooser was born on 6 Nov 1849.

A letter from Sarah Hooser toHannah Bartlett as follows:
Dear Sister June the 14,1857
I take this opportunity to inform you that we are all well at this
time and hope that these few lines will find you enjoying the same
blessing. Ihave not written to you before because I ha nothing of
importance to write. And have nothing much to write yet but as you have
not thought it worth whileto scratch a line to me I would write a few
lines to you to let you know that my affection still clings to you. Lucy
was here three weeks ago last Saturday. She is at John Whitcombs now and
Bob and Bet is well and Frank cannot walk yet, and as I came home from
Clinton I saw Mary Beard or Cheedle it usedto be and she wanted to know
when I heard from you and she sent her respectsto you and said that she
would like to see you. Charlie has grown so that you would not know
him. He can crawl everywhere and climb up anything that hecan get hold
of. His hair is a light brown and as curly as it can be. It has been a
very backward spring here since it has turned warn it has rained almost
constant. Ellen is almost as large as I am. She weighs 120 lbs. I send
my respects to Mr. Johnson and Mary and Andrew and my love more
especiallyto you. So no more but remains, your affectionate sister
until deathSarah Hooser to Hannah Bartlett
It is thought that Sarah was part Afro-American ancestry as many of
the descendants espectially the girls had heart problems associated with
negroid blood at the time and Sybil Hooser, a grandaughter who died in
child birth. The baby was a throw back and was obviously part
afro-american child.
Supposed to be 1/8 or 1/4 to 1/2 Afro-American according to the notes of
cousin Marlene Hooser Ninteman.

Dear Darrell,November 28,2001
Greetings from the San Francisco Bay. I just saw your email posting
concerning the Bartlett girls from John Bartlett and Sophia Reeder. I do
not know much about them and have been trying to find out more about them
for years, but have not much luck. Their daughter Elizabeth is my great
great Grandmother. She married Robert William Gosnell, who was my
maternal grandfather's grandfather. It goes like this:
I amNathan Ward Pyles, the son of
Sandra Jean Gosnell, the daughter of
Max DavisGosnell, the son of
Albert James Gosnell, the son of
Robert William Gosnell and Elizabeth Bartlett.
Now, I have heard an old family story from my grandfather (Max
Gosnell) that this John Bartlett was either a direct descendent from
Josiah Bartlett, the singer of the Declaration of Independence, or his
great+Uncles. I was wondering if you had heard any such story before? I
look forward to hearing from you. (By the way, I was just in Vermilion
County, Clinton,Indiana last Wednesday) Cheers,
Nate Pyles
