William was adopted out as an infant to a Swiss immigrant couple, Peterand Elizabeth Rahm. Their daughter, Caroline, had died and the couplewanted a child. Tradition says they gave the poverty-stricken Hayes' acow in exchange for William. William kept his family name and he alsoknew well his brothers and sisters. William's son, Harry, said heremembered William's father, Samuel, coming to visit him. William alsohad a picture and a portrait of his mother, Susan.
